For the modern briefträger who won’t be seen on the postal route without the latest, freshest wheels, look no further than this electrified Ford Transit. Germany’s privatized mail service, Deutsche Post DHL Group, has ordered 2500 of the full-size electric vans as part of a carbon-free delivery initiative that began in 2013.
By the end of 2018, these box vans will join the 2500 electric vans already moving mail all over Germany. They’re built by StreetScooter, a German manufacturer owned by Deutsche Post that supplies custom delivery vehicles similar to the smaller Transit Connect. StreetScooter will manufacture the new vans, just as Ford did with the short-lived Transit Connect Electric when it contracted the now-defunct Azure Dynamics in 2010 to convert them to battery power.
Ford hasn’t released any specifications and it’s clear, for now, that unless you wear a black-and-yellow or red-and-yellow shirt to work, you won’t touch this Transit EV. For everyone else (including FedEx drivers), there’s the Nissan e-NV200 that’s been out in Europe and Japan since 2014.
